"Our Tip Gauges measure the tip opening (distance between the reed to the tip rail) on woodwind mouthpieces. This distance is necessary to know when purchasing a new mouthpiece, switching between mouthpieces, or mouthpiece refacing. Our gauges measure more simply and accurately than any ever made!" - Theo Wanne

There has been a great deal of controversy over the French Curve. The French Curve is defined by a concavity in the table. The table is not flat, it has a dip in the middle of it.
In a French Curve the .02 or .015 gauge still hits the same point on the glass gauge as normal. However, when pressure is applied to the reed by the ligature the reed molds to the table, and the facing, in essence, is lengthened.
The other purpose for the dip in the table is to help resonance. The front and back of the table presses harder on the reed than the middle of the table. In Theory, this allows the reed to vibrate more freely. I am not fully convinced this is true. However, many people are.
As I was saying, this is a controversial curve.
Any opinions?

Theo writes, "...For example, an improvising musician must have faith in order to play. The mind is cleared, and then, like magic, music comes forth.
If we are thinking the entire time we are trying to improvise, we will play terribly. To clear the mind and have faith that the music will come…is to allow the Divine to shine on through" |
